This will be a 4-5 page reading of a short passage of Scripture. You are expected to engage thoughtfully with Dei Verbum, and the class textbook. For your text, please select from the texts covered in the first four chapters of the textbook, listed in the table of contents, pages x-xi.
I do not expect a full explanation of your text, only that you engage both the Catholic Church’s doctrine as laid out in Dei Verbum, and the modern methods that we have learned so far, in briefly interpreting a text. Your guiding question should be how Dei Verbum relates to the question of modern vs. ancient interpretation, specifically in the context of the story or chapter of the Bible that you have chosen.
Begin by slowly and closely reading your chosen text. Write down any questions or thoughts that particularly interest you. Choose a question to pursue, and then research it in the sources provided. Take notes on what you find, and then consider it in the light of what you have learned from the lectures, Kugel, and Dei Verbum. Outline, and write what you found as your paper. The paper is due by the end of the third week of class (Friday at 5:00 P.M.).
Please use the MLA style for your paper. I will post a link to the Purdue Owl’s resources for following that style sheet on formatting and citations. Proper spelling, grammar, usage, formatting, and style will affect your grade.
