The company Google collects data on the searches done by millions of individuals, to create user profiles.  Such profiles are valuable to  advertisers so they can target specific Google users with their ads.  The profiles are also used by Google itself to “second-guess” the type of information the user is seeking.  For instance,  someone profiled as “conservative” who googles “gun control” might get the first links to support the National Rifle Association.  Someone profiled as “liberal”, googling “gun control,” might get the first links to the Brady Campaign to Stop Gun Violence.  Is such profiling by Google just a savvy business practice?  What is the downside of a huge information-provider like Google “telling people what they want to hear” on important criminal justice issues?
