Start Assignment 12 – Formal Analysis Paper: Film Responses – Early Film. For this week’s Formal Analysis assignment, you will be writing three reviews that deal with the subject of early film. The analysis will be a film review of three other early films. Each analysis will be at least a half a page in length, typed and double-spaced.

As you view the films, consider how the cuts, camera angles, shots and movement work to create particular meanings. In addition, note details of the narrative, setting, characters, lighting, props, costume, tone, and sound. Take notes for each film, on the following questions:
What was the theme of the film?
What was the filmmaker trying to tell us? Was he/she successful?
What did you like best about the film? Why?
Was there something you did not understand in the film?
Who was your favorite character? Why?
Who was your least favorite character? Why?
What is the music’s purpose in the film? How does it direct our attention within the image? How does it shape our interpretation of the image?
Share your personal thoughts on the film, which could be in the form of whether you liked the film or not? Why or why not?
After viewing the films, please type your findings about three of the films you viewed. One film you review must be of the Battleship Potemkin, one must be of Un Chien Andalou, and the other early film to be reviewed is your choice, from the early films listed in your resources (Trip to the Moon, The Lumiere Brothers’ First Films, or Ballet Mecanique). This paper will be typed, in complete sentences, and submitted as one entire Word document to the assignment page.
These three analysis papers must be typed and submitted electronically in a single MS Word (.doc or .docx) format. The file must be named in the following format: Lastname_Assignment12.doc. Submit your completed document to Assignment 12, listed on the Modules and Assignments pages, as a file attachment.
