This very sad and confusing current event seems to have answers in endocrinology. Although the online version of the Daily Post post article dated April 7-8 doesn’t make much comment on it, the front page of the Daily Post printed newspaper this weekend has more:

If you don’t have access to the paper I’ll summarize it here: It looks like Chuchu Ma had pancreatitis and had a device that constantly monitored her blood sugar level. Dr. Elizabeth Fraze, an endocrinologist, suggested Ma could have been hypoglycemic (had very low blood sugar). This may have caused her to become confused, even psychotic and may have caused hallucinations.
There are a few common causes for pancreatitis, since she was such a young and functional person she probably had some sort of biological or genetic disorder. Pancreatitis is often caused by alcohol abuse or gall stones. In the end the why of her disease does not really affect the outcomes of her disease, it just matters that she had it and this may be the cause of her death.
The endocrine system has been such a biological mystery for much of human history. In the last 50 years we have learned much much more about the functions of our endocrine glands, but there is much more to learn.
Take a look at the articles below, maybe get a copy of the Daily Post and read the article dated April 7-8 on the front page. If you were the coroner what would you conclude?
This accident happened in Dec 2017, it is in the paper today because the autopsy report was just released.
