HOW TO COMPLETE

Choose ONE of the four options below to complete this assignment.

  1. Write a sonnet like “The World Is Too Much With Us.” Choose a Romantic topic and write a poem that explains your feelings on the topic (refer back to 7.00 Romantics vs. romance: What’s the difference? if you need refreshing on the topics). Remember a sonnet is a 14-line poem with a strong rhyme scheme. This article from The Academy of American Poets (Links to an external site.) explains the different types of sonnets with examples. Be sure to include at least three of the literary devices you are studying for this module. Some questions to consider:
    • How is the topic manifested in our modern world?
    • How should/do others interact with this topic?
  2. Write a mimic poem like “I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud.” Think of a time you were struck by a beautiful image or a memorable moment. Mimic the line structure and use of literary devices used by Wordsworth to describe the image or moment in a way that brings it alive for your reader. If you follow Wordsworth’s form closely, you will have no problem incorporating the necessary three literary devices you are studying for this module. See these examples:
    • I slept quietly as a hound//That slumbers after a long, hunting day//When all at once I heard a sound//A song, of a sad runaway;
    • Away from home, toward the extreme,//Chasing and running down a dream.
  3. Write a poem about a dream like “Kubla Khan”. Remember dreams are disjointed and often don’t make sense though there is usually some similar topic or theme. Can you create three distinct sections that are connected by one of the Romantic topics or ideals? Be sure to incorporate three of the literary devices you are studying for this module.
  4. If writing a poem isn’t your thing, put your analysis skills to work. Choose a poem from Lyrical Ballads at Project Gutenberg (Links to an external site.)Read and analyze the poem in a well-written two paragraphs. Be sure to answer these two questions in your analysis:
    • What Romantic ideals or topics are in the poem and how does the poem act as a representative of the movement?
    • What are three literary devices used in the poem and what effect do they have?
