In a sense, the United States waged two quite separate wars between 1941 and 1945.  One took place in Europe, the other in Japan.  The focus of this question is on the latter theater.  In what way was the Pacific Theater a race war in a way that it was not in the Western European
theater? How do we account for Allied success in its war with Japan?  In this section of your
exam, be sure to include reference to two or three battles.  What offensive strategies did the U.S. employ to win the war against Japan and what role did machines and technology play in the way the U.S. waged war in the Pacific?  Why did it make sense, as Thomas Searle explained, to kill skilled workers?  (Searle article) Finally, why did the US drop atomic bombs on Japan, why were no alternatives seriously considered, and what were the contours of the ensuing debate over the use of the bomb?  Do you see continuity or discontinuity in the ways FDR and Truman thought about the atomic bomb?   As part of your response, you may choose to integrate into your answer a discussion of John Dowers, Race, Language, and War in Two Cultures: World War II in Asia, Martin Sherwins The Atomic Bomb and the Origins of the Cold War: U.S. Atomic-Energy Policy and Diplomacy, 1941-1945, and Barton J. Bernstein, Understanding the Atomic Bomb and the Japanese Surrender: Missed Opportunities, Little-Known Near Disasters, and Modern Memory.
