How do you perceive people with disability? How does society? Our perception can be influenced by our upbringing, cultural background, personal experiences, media portrayals and misconceptions. It’s important that we take these into consideration when thinking about people with disability. Read below to learn more about perceptions of disability, people first language, and basic etiquette tips.

People First Language versus Identity First Language

Recently, there has been an ongoing debate about the language we should use when talking about disabilities and people. People First Language, which is what I talk about in the PowerPoint is an older mode of talking about disability. Identity First Language is a newer movement that believes people with a disability should be called "disabled person" whereas People First Langauge would say "person with a disability." This difference is based on the perception of personhood and disability. Is a disability something that you have or is it your identity? 
Ultimately, it’s about empowerment, advocacy, and respect for the disability community. Read the link below to learn more.
