you are going to write a hybrid research paper which is connected in some way to the process of/ theories about/uses of dreaming.

It can be about the brain itself, interpretations of your own dreams, or of the dreams of your friends and family. It could be a survey of dreams (e.g. the erotic dreams of college students, the anxiety dreams of stressed out freshmen during a pandemic). It could center on theories of dreaming, various aspects of dreams (e.g., recurring dreams, prophetic dreams, lucid dreaming, sleep paralysis/night terrors, the ways in which dreams are used by therapists, the relationship between dreams and religion, dreams in other cultures, the use of dreams by shamans), you could perform a dream experiment (can I teach myself to lucidly dream in 10 days? can I transmit an image in my dreams to my former roommate?) or even the creative language of the dream state as it appears in a writer, an artist, a filmmaker you admire (i.e., Kafka, Kahlo, Dali, Magritte, Bunuel, Hitchcock…). These are merely suggestions; there are numerous other possibilities.

For Wednesday December 1 you must come up with a proposal describing what you plan to write about and why; if you’re uncertain, I’ll try to help you, but you need to have an idea, some thoughts about your area of interest. (I am aware that this is rushing you but we are tragically running out of time).

You need to find a topic which intrigues you, certainly, but you also need to find a topic about which a reasonable amount of documentation exists. I can direct you to some material.

By December 8, you must have some kind of outline or the first few pages or an expanded/extended proposal with some research to show that you know (sort of) what you’re doing. We will read pages/consult on December 13.

The essay is due on Thursday December 16, during exam week

The final paper must be 7 pages long; it must have a title and a works cited page; you should use the MLA format. You must use at least 3 sources–if you are interviewing friends or family about their dreams, that counts as a source; your own dreams can be a source.  But you need research material too, thats why this is a hybrid papersome personal material, some research. I beg of you not to use Wikipedia as a source (though it can certainly lead to other sources).

I will be posting some previous versions of this assignment, which we will discuss on December 6.

              For your proposal:

  • What aspect of dreams do you plan to consider?
  • Why are you interested in this idea/area of study?
  • What do you expect you will find in looking into this idea?
  • What sources do you hope to use?
  • What is your back-up plan?

This is not strictly speaking a traditional research paperI dont want you to write a research paper on Freud. You can certainly write about Freud but it should be in the context of your own experience of some of his ideas.  You can write about dreams in films, or the Surrealists but you also need some personal materialyour own take on this material rather than just what critics say about them.

You can certainly write about your own dreams but if you do that, you need to use your dreams as an example of how dreams work/how we might understand them/what dream experts might say about themsomething like that.

You do not have to prove anything.  A perfectly interesting paper can be written about lucid dreaming without your actually being successful in altering your dream that way.

Also, you can be skeptical of various claims of psychic/prophetic dreaming/ESP in dreams and still write an interesting paper about that.
