Get the pre-writing for your argumentative essay started! Depending on where you are in your planning, this journal entry will be one of the following:
  1. A brainstorming session. Which topic have you chosen from our list? What supporting points are reasonable? Are there any counterarguments? What points are brought up with those? What research sources immediately come to mind? Utilize lists, sentences, bullet points… whatever you need to stay organized. Use this journal to figure out what you are writing about and how you want to write it.
  2. An informal outline. You know your topic, have an idea of your three supporting points and have thought about opposing viewpoints. Now, start putting some structure to it. Utilize numbered or bulleted lists to arrange your ideas. Your outline will have a working “hook”, thesis statement, three points of support with topic sentences, a point of rebuttal, and a working closure (the last sentence or two of your conclusion). If needed, see Unit 1 > Week 2 for an outline template.
As always, write to the best of your ability, including grammar, spelling, and punctuation. In the planning phase of writing, though, these elements are not graded.
