This week’s discussion forum assignment is in two parts.

1. In this week’s module, among other topics, we are studying the relationship between moral philosophy and organized religion. Many people think morality and religion are intimately linked and would be surprised by the arguments presented in Chapter 1 of the text. In your first post, answer this question: Of the many reasons the author gives for philosophically separating our moral reasoning from our religious understanding, which of his arguments do you think is the strongest? Why? Try to carefully outline his reasoning, showing how it supports his conclusion, even if in the end you disagree with his conclusion. Your first post is due by Wednesday at 11:59pm. While I encourage you to type your post into a word processor to check for spelling and grammar errors, please don’t “attach”: simply copy/paste your issue into the discussion box. 2. In your second post, choose another student’s post to reply to. Imagine that you’re a critic of the arguments in the text. In a first short paragraph, can you think of an objection to the argument that the student identified? Be sure that you’re not simply rejecting the conclusion, but rather think carefully about the reasons that he gives in support of his conclusion, and try to give a strong criticism of the argument that the student has outlined from the first chapter. Finally, in a second short paragraph, who do you think has the strongest argument — the textbook, or your own critical objection? Try to choose a thread with no other replies, so that everyone gets a reply, and no one gets too many. The idea here is that we’re trying to determine what is the best approach to making moral judgments, especially as they are related to religious questions. Your last post is due by Sunday at 11:59pm.
