EffectiveCommunication as a Nurse

When it comes to nursing, effective communication is key. There are many things to consider when communicating with your patient. Some ofthose include their age, culture, race, gender and living situation. Beingculturally diverse is very important so that you can deliver optimal patientcare in a respectful manner. As a nurse you want to be as relatable as possiblebecause this will determine the effectiveness of a therapeutic relationshipbetween you and the nurse. In being culturally competent it makes it possibleto provide quality and culturally sensitive care. For example, if you aredealing with a child patient you will communicate in terms children willunderstand, small words, pictures or even role play with stuffed animals sothey do not fear you. For an adult patient you will consider several factors. Theirculture, what customs are they used to and how do they prefer to learn so thatyou can best assist their needs. In relation to the culture, as a nurse youmust be familiar with many different cultures so that you know how tocommunicate effectively. You need to speak in terms that are easy for thepatient to understand, you cannot be judgmental or disregard a patientsbeliefs just because they do not align with your own, you should empathize withthe patient as much as possible, and you should be welcoming. All this allowsfor you and the patient to be comfortable with each other and establishtherapeutic communication. Cultural competence prepares you, as the nurse toempathize, relate more to patients, and attend more deeply to their needs.

My background is Cuban, so growing up in our culture itis customary to always treat the older adults, whether they are family or notwith the utmost respect and to always take care of them when it comes to theirhealth. Normally we do not put our older adult family members in nursing homes.Usually, we take them into our own home and care for them when they no longercan care for themselves. In our culture, we also tend to use more home remediesto treat certain illnesses. And when it comes to communication, it does notalways have to be very professional. It can be more personal because it makesthem feel more comfortable. In doing some of these things it gives the olderadult some sense of self autonomy because in our culture even if we have totake them in to care for them, we still allow them to do as much as possible ontheir own so they maintain their self-worth. Unfortunately, society does notalways treat our elderly population so great. Society views our elderlypopulation as less valuable since they cannot do or perform as they once didwhen they were younger. They are viewed in more of a negative light becausethey may have health issues or have limitations. In summary, every culture isdifferent and has their own way of treating and communicating with people ofall age groups. Ultimately, all that matters is that we treat our patients in arespectful manner and always consider their culture, age, gender, and race.
