Assignment Description

This assignment lays the foundation for your research paper. Beginning with the reading

from your synthesis paper (Allen and Sachs), you will continue to explore the topic of

EITHER Indigenous food insecurity or gender and food security. You will do this by using the

library tutorials to perform research and find two additional sources on your topic. You will also

brainstorm a research question, summarize all three sources and provide MLA citations for each

source.

This assignment asks the following of you:

  • Write fluently and grammatically in a range of academic forms and genres
  • Read actively and closely through annotating, elaborating, reflection and questioning
  • Summarize sources in written
  • Explain the significance of global and local cultural issues raised in literary texts
  • Demonstrate information literacy skills following a library-based introduction to university

level research

  • Document source material using professional styles such as MLA

Assignment instructions:

  • Decide whether you want to pursue the topic of Indigenous food security or gender and

food security. Depending on your decision, Allen and Sachs

(gender) will become your first of three resources for your final research project.

  • Review lesson 7: the research question and follow the steps to brainstorm your own

research question on the topic of either Indigenous/gender food insecurity.

  • Watch the library research tutorials (8 in total = 75 minutes) and use the information from

these tutorials to apply the skills you learned in the tutorials to find two more sources

relevant to your topic. At least one of your additional sources must be an academic

source. You may want to consider adding a source that includes Indigenous and/or

gendered perspectives of people with lived experience as your second additional

source.

  • Consult lesson 7: academic integrity (to be reviewed during our synchronous lesson).
  • Compile your research into a list of sources that clearly identifies (1) your research question

(2) MLA style entry for each of your three sources (3) a brief 1-2 sentence summary about

the primary purpose of each text and (4) 1-2 sentences describing how this text will support

your research.
