Seeing the Emperor and a girl in modern generation

In these days, we can easily find a lot of contents that arouses our interest just by turning on a television. One of the topics that many people tend to be attracted to is the one associated with a love between a young chaebol from a wealthy family and an ordinary woman and this content is significant in the poem by Emperor Yuryaku. The poem ‘Lovely basket, your lovely basket’ is relatively short and covers the very beginning of an event as if only a brief clip of a drama or movie was shown as a preview. Therefore, the poem by Emperor Yuryaku ends with an open unfolding instead of an open ending, leaving the readers to imagine what could have happened after. Many ancient literatures tend to be missing the authors but this poem seems to have written by the Emperor Yuryaku himself while thinking and longing for the girl (because he wouldn’t have written the poem while talking to her). The part I keep going back for questioning is why the little girl didn’t answer the question when Emperor Yuryaku asked and if he ever made a visit to see her again after writing this poem. In this essay, I wanted to explore into the original poem by Emperor Yuryaku, to figure out who he really was and graft it to modernized world.
The poem by Emperor Yuryaku is believed to have been written between 456AD and 479AD when he was serving as an Emperor at that time (Keen, The full text of “Manyoshu”). I HOPE THAT YOU DO ENOUGH RESEARCH TO DISCOVER (AND DISCUSS) THE FACT THAT MANY PEOPLE TODAY DISAGREE THAT YURYAKU ACTUALLY WROTE THIS POEM.  The story unfolds on one spring day with the Emperor Yuryaku at a spring outing event in a field when a young lady, who was picking herbs, gets his attention. After finding the girl interesting, Emperor Yuryaku asks her name, which in ancient Japan during the 4th century, asking a woman’s name meant proposal. She dares to disobey the order to the Emperor Yuryaku and without answering to his question, she runs away to the hill and hides herself. The poem ends with Emperor Yuryaku expressing regrets of not being able to share who he is and what kind of a person he is with her because of a one-sided courtship (Koo, From Yuryaku to Yakamochi). The reason why I’m seeing Emperor Yuryaku with lovesickness is because the poem should be written after Emperor Yuryaku and the girl’s meeting. If there weren’t regretting of lack of communication with the girl or missing of the girl, Emperor Yuryaku wouldn’t create such serenade of love.
If I were to take this content of the poem and look through a modern perspective, the resemblance of Disney, such as Cinderlla, comes to my mind. The fairy tale of Cinderella (Perrault, Cinderella) is a story of a young girl gets invited to a ballroom party and stumbles upon a prince charming, who falls in love with her and makes his ways to find her. Because the poem ends in open unfolding, meaning there is no content after, readers are left to imaginations trying to find out the true attempts of Emperor Yuryaku.
Among movies and dramas based on this Cinderella-like theme, Korean dramas such as ‘Princess Hours (Lee & Do)’ and ‘Protect the Boss (Kwon)’ are emerging and gaining its popularity these days. If I were to take Emperor Yuryaku’s poem to an even more modern perspective than western fairy tales, we can replace Emperor Yuryaku to a CEO of a successful global company and the girl to a common middle-class working girl. A social superior man and a normal girl with a casual encounter is significant main characters and beginning of most loved Korean dramas’ theme that loved most by Koreans. There are reasons why such plot has gained popularity in Korea, but one main thing is the background of the time. In Korea, due to rapid industrialization and economic development, the gap between the rich and the poor and various problems emerged such as the prevalence of materialism. Because of that, it can be said that as many people feel admiration and envy for the life of the chaebol and the upper class, they are naturally interested in the ‘Cinderella Story’. Again, the whole story of poem by Yuryaku seems similar to the beginning of dramas I mentioned.
Then, let’s say the modern interpretation of Emperor Yuryaku can be substituted as a CEO of a global company, and the girl as a very ordinary girl who lives not far from the place where the Emperor Yuryaku lives. One day, just when Emperor Yuryaku felt bombarded with amount of workload, he finds out that the sister company under his company was hosting an apple picking event not far from home. He decides to take a break and attends the event. Meanwhile, the girl was already participating in the event to give those harvested apples to her family and friends. Emperor Yuryaku falls in love with her at a glance and approaches her, ultimately even proposing to her at that very event. Surprised and shocked by his abrupt gestures, the girl ends up running away in a flurry and the modernized story of his original poem ends with him reminiscing her.
Then, why did the girl not only answer to Emperor Yuryaku’s proposal and run away? Is it because Emperor Yuryaku is ugly or because his social reputation is bad? Before asking why she didn’t answer, we need to know who Emperor Yuryaku was historically. According to the Nihongi the Japanese secretary (Aston, Nihongi), Emperor Yuryaku went on a hunt, and then saw a subordinate who couldn’t shoot and kill a wild boar. Seeing it, Emperor Yuryaku was angry and tried to kill the subordinate, but he didn’t kill him because his wife stopped him to. Moreover, when his aide praised his wife’s appearance, Emperor Yuryaku sent him out to the province and made his wife a concubine.
Seeing these anecdotes remain, we can see that he is a very promiscuous and cruel person unlike that we felt while reading his poem. If we see Emperor Yuryaku in modern society, he must have been an entrepreneur with a bad reputation for having affairs habitually and abusing his subordinates commonly. The girl apparently heard about him at least once through media, so she would have rejected his sudden proposal because she knew who he was. Then did he ever make a visit to see her again after writing this poem? If we think about his usual conduct based on historical grounds, perhaps he developed an obsession with her. There is a record of stealing his subordinate’s wife only because his subordinate boasted his wife is pretty. Emperor Yuryaku who overfond of female couldn’t even talk to the girl he fell in love with at first glance, would it be over with just writing a poem after? In my personal opinion, perhaps Emperor Yuryaku looked for her but couldn’t find, or even if he did, she would have become his concubine just as his subordinate’s wife suffered. In the modern world, as a greedy CEO obsessed with a beautiful woman is likely to lead to the next story of finding the girl. I THINK WHAT YOU’VE DONE HERE IS VERY INTERESTING, AND ILLUSTRATES HOW ONE MIGHT INTERPRET THIS POEM. HOWEVER, YOU NEED TO JUSTIFY THIS UNUSUAL METHOD OF INTERPRETATION. AFTER ALL, THIS POEM WAS WRITTEN AT LEAST 1200 YEARS AGO. WHY DO YOU FEEL JUSTIFIED IN USING THE MODERN SENSIBILITIES OF KOREAN DRAMAS TO INTERPRET A 1200 YEAR OLD POEM? THIS REQUIRES AN INTERESTING ARGUMENT ON YOUR PART.

Now the interesting question is that how will Emperor Yuryaku in the 21st century find her? Since the apple picking event was organized by the sister company of Emperor Yuryaku’s company, we could assume, especially in the world we live in today, that the company would have kept some sort of a data for marketing purpose that lists all the attendees of the event. As I mentioned previously of his past behaviors, he will probably take unethical course by becoming a stalker. Urged to find her, Emperor Yuryaku would go through the list of the attendees, either himself or by ordering his people to, and ultimately succeed in finding her whereabouts and make a visit. It would not matter for Emperor Yuryaku if the girl was already engaged or married. If he is the person I believe to be in the 21st century, I can imagine him offering loads amount of money to her boyfriend or husband, whoever it may be, in order to make her his. His gesture might come off as a genuine request, but it will probably mean a threat that is intimidating with unreasonable demands. Whatever the action he would take to get the girl and knowing the type of person he was, it will not be one we see from romantic movies. GREAT. IF YOU WERE WRITING A 21ST CENTURY KOREAN DRAMA, THAT MIGHT MAKE SENSE. BUT WHY DO YOU THINK IT MAKES SENSE FOR A 1200 YEAR OLD POEM?
If readers who know nothing about Emperor Yuryaku read his poem, they could not forget the girl he fell in love with at first glance and could be a romanticist who made his missing heart into a song. According to the Nihongi, Yuryaku as an emperor took good care of his country and was interested in diplomacy, so he maintained a good relationship with neighbor countries across the sea, however, Emperor Yuryaku as a human was very cruel and overfond of female (Koo, From Yuryaku to Yakamochi). Even if Emperor Yuryaku, who was this inclination, is assumed as a character of the modern era, he may be good at his businesses, but may not have a good reputation or may not be a person with good conduct. From this point of view, we can also see why the girl ran away without answering his question. BUT AGAIN, I DON’T SEE HER RUN AWAY IN THE POEM! HOW DO YOU JUSTIFY THAT INTERPRETATION?
In the literature we usually read and watch, the beginning, the development, the crisis, the climax, and the ending are properly established, however, this poem by Emperor Yuryaku is written only in the beginning. This has the advantage that readers and audiences have the advantage that they can freely imagine the situation after the plot. Emperor Yuryaku just as seen in the poem, and after knowing who he was historically, we could see that he was really different. Another important point is that, regardless of the past and the present, the humanity of a person can be seen by looking at how someone treats people around him or her, regardless of power. We can think of many reasons why the girl did not answer the Emperor Yuryaku’s question, even when I try to assume him into modern society, Emperor Yuryaku must be a man of bad humanity other than the title of a successful businessman.
(I need stronger conclusion)
MAYBE YOU DO. BUT I THINK THIS IS BECAUSE YOU HAVEN’T EXAMINE ALTERNATE THEORIES. I BELEIVE IN CLASS DISCUSSION WE ACKNOWELDGED THE POSSIBILITY THAT THE GIRL IS NOT FROM A LOWER CLASS. YOU ALSO HAVEN’T EXAMINED THE POSSIBILITY THAT HE ACTUALLY SUCCEEDS WITH HER AFTER THE FINAL LINE OF THE POEM.
I THINK AFTER YOU EXAMINE THOSE POSSIBILITIES, YOU WILL ACTUALLY WANT TO SOFTEN YOUR CONCLUSION! THAT IS, YOUR CONCLUSION MIGHT NOT BE ACCURATE. AND WITH THAT IN MIND, YOU MIGHT WANT TO ADDRESS THE QUESTION: WHY END THE POEM THE WAY IT IS ENDED? WHY MIGHT A POET END A POEM THIS WAY? (OR, A KOREAN SCREENWRITER?) EVEN MORE, WHY DO YOU FEEL THE NEED TO FIGURE OUT THE ENDING THIS WAY?
(need stronger conclusion)
