FEEL FREE TO NARROW DOWN THE QUESTION

You should continue to refine and narrow your research question as you progress through this unit. Thus you are expected to add new, more focused sources to your bibliography should you choose to continue Project 2. You will need to do more in this assignment than make a simple pro/con argument that you already feel certain about. Use this assignment to learn something new and challenge your understanding of your topic. One of the main goals of this paper is originality. As in the first major assignment, it will be crucial for you to develop your own unique voice in this argument.

For this assignment you will practice using the rhetoric and research methods we have analyzed and practiced so far this semester to make an informed argument directed at a specific audience. You should give serious thought to and make a conscious choice of who your audience will be. It will be your job to both introduce your specific research question (not the entire topic, but the specific piece of a larger field you are addressing), and then make a well-reasoned, rhetorically effective argument.

You have already developed a research question, so now you will need to consider where you plan to jump into the discussion. Use these questions to get started thinking about how to intervene:

  1. What is at stake or interesting to me in this debate?
  2. How can I contribute something to this conversation
  3. What genre of essay do I want to write? Narrative? Informative? Critical? Read some examples of sample student papers on Canvas.
  4. What does my audience need to know about this topic?
  5. Can I use what someone else has already said as a starting point?
    1. You might extend someones argument, critique someones argument to offer a counterargument, or make an interesting twist on someones argument.
  6. How can I make a rhetorically effective argument from the position I want to take?
    1. What kind of evidence will I need to support my position?
    2. What kind of rhetorical choices will I make to convince my audience of my perspective?
