The idea of these reviews is simply that you do a really thorough read of the book, and then write up your thoughts about it.

What’s most important is, first, that you think hard about what you took away from this book–what did it teach you that you didn’t know before, what are it’s strong points, what are it’s weaker points and ways the author could, in your opinion, have done  a better job.

Did reading the book change the way you thought about the issue the author is writing about? Did it make you mad? Did it make you want to take some kind of action about that issue–or others? Are there ways in which it fits with your own personal experience, or that of your families or friends?

Second, it’s important to write these reviews in your own voice. You should try to write in  way that feels natural and comfortable to you–don’t try to sound like some sort of stiff academic or write fancy language that you don’t generally use. Be yourself, but write your thoughts as clearly as possible. And, of course, it’s important that your words and ideas be your own–don’t substitute other people’s ideas or words for yours.
