Some people make a delicate transition in life – the move from “kid’s movies” to “grown-up movies.” This is a really big deal. Mom starts letting you watch PG movies! And then PG-13 movies! And then you sneak into an R-rated movie with your friend and then lie to Mom about it. It is a right of passage. Hilariously enough, some people decide to have kids of their own. Amazingly, their kids start out with “kid’s movies,” and at some point, the parent realizes that he/she has now come full-circle.

So, logically, we now segue to this week’s discussion on the progression of aircraft from sleek (aka, very fragile) wood and fabric construction to super-sturdy metal construction. It’s about more than just that though. It’s about the progression of aircraft up to this point in history, a review of where we came from, and even a look at how much farther we have yet to go.

For this week’s discussion, I want you to comment on the points below. Remember to author an original post and then comment on the posts of at least two fellow students (which I will provide after the assignment is finished). Let’s have a good, productive discussion!

Other than simply because the materials had become available, why do we see the progression from wood and fabric construction to metal construction through “The Golden Age”?
When you consider airplane design, testing, and development in the early 1900s, what do you notice has changed by the time we make it to the 1930s?
Which leap in aircraft design do you consider the most significant between 1919 and 1939?
What changes were made in pilot training from 1919-1939, and why were they made?
What design factor(s) made the first commercial airliners successful?
What affect did the legislation of the 1920s and 1930s have on general, commercial, and military aviation?
BONUS: What is your favorite aircraft to come out of “The Golden Age” of aviation, and why?
