1. From the following styles we have studied so far this semester, determine which type of poem you will
write:
● Epic: An extended narrative poem that tells of the adventures and actions of a hero that is
generally larger than life. Contains an invocation to the muse in the opening lines, the
description of momentous events, supernatural characters, and solemn and elevated language
● Elegy: An elegy is a poem that laments or meditates on the passing or death of something or
someone of value. Another way to define it is a lyric poem with a formal style and serious tone
that focuses on the subject of loss or death.
● Metaphysical: Expressed intense emotion and includes many scientific and philosophical
references (Donne)
● Pastoral: Celebrated the idealized vision of country life and nature (Marlowe & Raleigh)
● Ode: Characterized by a highly solemn and serious tone, focuses on praising people, natural
scenes, a thing, and abstract ideas. They often address and intense emotion or celebrate an
object or image that leads to revelation.
● Sonnet: 14 lines in iambic pentameter. DUE TO THE SPECIFIC STRUCTURE, the sonnet is
EXEMPT from the length requirement.
