Pick a single work dating from before 1946 by an artist illustrated in your text and compare it to
another work not illustrated in your text nor one included in the slides you see in lecture: check
your study list. You may select a work from one of the Metropolitan Museum of Arts Heilbrunn
Timeline of Art History (there are links on the course site), or find a work through another
source. Both works can be by the same artist, or they can be by two different artists. This is not a
research paper, though you will find it helpful to know something about the artist and work you
are discussing. In a 3-page paper (no more no less), describe the work you have chosen. How is
it like the work in the text to which you are comparing it? How is it different? You may compare
a work in your text to a work by a European artist: just make sure it makes sense. If you write on
two works illustrated in your text, your score will be 0. Your essays should be 3 pages (no more,
no less).
