In this 12-page paper, you will practice your written communication skills by researching and analyzing a topic in health communication that interests you. This paper will follow a theory-application format, meaning the discussion of your topic will be guided by one or more health communication theories. You may select any topic that interests you, but topics must be approved by me to ensure you are able to meet the requirements of the assignment. You may use any sources we have read and discussed in class to help formulate this paper, but you must draw information from at least 5 additional academic peer reviewed sources. You should go beyond the assigned course materials to demonstrate a deeper understanding of your chosen topic.
Four steps guide the development of this research paper:
- Choose a health communication topic: Topics can be interpreted broadly, but some examples include but are not limited to disclosing health concerns to others (e.g. romantic partners, friends, family, etc.), patient-provider discussions about a specific health concern, a recent health campaign aimed at improving community wellbeing, etc.
- Consider which communication theories could apply. Depending on your topic, you may need to do some additional research. What health communication theories are being used in academic journals to explain your topic or a similar topic? What theories are you aware of from course readings that might apply?
- Reflect on how topic and theory relates to your life. Reflect on your own relationship with the topic…tell a story about your own personal experiences. Consider how the course content may have informed or raised questions about some aspect of your health-related experiences. For example, what new thoughts has this concept raised for you about your own health beliefs and behaviors? You might consider telling a brief story about how you were influenced (or not influenced) by something you saw in the media.
