A writing memoir memory

The Glass Menagerie lends itself to showing how to write a memoir essay. A memoir essay takes a snippet from memory and shows how this was a significant event in life, etc.

Begin the assignment by making a list of at least five significant memories. Avoid bad memories and look to “good” ones. An example of a memory that is significant in your life might be memories of playing in the yard while your parent was grilling or possibly mowing the yard.

Once you have a list, then you will choose one of these to be the subject of your paper. The essay should run two to three pages in length.

What the paper must have:

You need to use details (sight, sound, scent, touch, and taste) in order to create the scene so that the reader can visualize the setting of the memory.

You must choose whether to tell the memory in chronological order or tell it as a flashback (looking back on the memory from the present time).

You must describe the characters personalities and characteristics. You need to make them come alive. You should include detail, description, and dialogue.

The essay should have a balance between thought and action. Things should happen in the paper, but you also needs to explain the meaning behind the action.

By the end of the paper, you need to show the reader why the memory is important. For instance, using the memory example referenced above, it is an important memory because I remember playing in the yard with the scent of the grass being cut, as well as hearing the mower. My parent instilled in me a love of working that is even now an important part of my life.

This paper can be finished in FIRST PERSON.
