Why did monarchs find it necessary to construct an absolutist state in the 17th and 18th centuries? What are the hallmarks of such states? Please give examples that are found in Europe during this period: France, Austrian Empire, Ottoman Empire, etc. As you do your reasoning, how do you explain the fact that in Britain a Civil War in the 1640s and revolution in 1688 brought about a limited monarchy and established a parliamentary democracy and supremacy, rather than an absolutist state? One could argue that without this development in England, the United States would not exist since the American Revolutionaries and the Founding Fathers claimed to be fighting for and defending the constitutional principles won during the 17th century English Civil War & Glorious Revolution. What about the Dutch Republic? [By standard definition, a "Republic" is a country without a king. Therefore, the United States, China, Brazil, Iran, Ireland, etc. are all correctly classified as Republics.]
