African American Literature: Final Exam

For your final exam, you will write a four to five page essay, double-spaced in twelve-point Times New Roman Font, that responds to the following prompt.

The very first sentences from an assigned reading in this class were these: The engendering impulse of African American literature is to resist human tyranny.  The sustaining spirit of African American literature is dedication to human dignity.

Your task for this exam to is choose one long text or two short texts from the list below and explain how the text(s) accomplishes these two aspects: resistance to human tyranny and dedication to human dignity.  In your essay, you should examine multiple aspects of how the text(s) articulate notions of resisting tyranny and promote human dignity.

 Claude McKay, America (short)
Georgia Douglas Johnson, Common Dust (short)
Langston Hughes, The Negro Speaks of Rivers (short)
 James Baldwin, Sonnys Blues (short)
Martin Luther King, Jr. I Have a Dream (short)
Malcom X, The Ballot or the Bullet (short)
 Samuel R. Delany Babel-17 (long)
 Octavia Butler, Kindred (long)

In your essay, it is imperative that you

include a thesis statement that expresses how the text(s) resist human tyranny and promote human dignity.
provide examples (i.e. quotes and paraphrase) from the text(s) that support your thesis statement.  Show that you have read the text(s) thoroughly and can write about them with reasonable mastery.
interpret those examples, telling your reader how the examples prove your thesis is valid.
give your essay an interesting title.
