Here is an excellent example of a sample philosophy paper – it is actually a philosophy of
religion paper – but the margins show excellent examples of philosophic writings:

Sources:
All sources must be evaluated using the following link:

If they do not pass the tests listed here, points will be deducted for using a questionable or
invalid source.
You must have at least 2 sources for this paper – not including any of the texts.
Structure of Paper:
Part One: Introduction to the Ethical Dilemma (What am I talking about – or what did I do at the
time)
Part Two: Analysis of Ethical Dilemma in the attempt to discern relevant facts. (Focus on the
portions of this story that makes it a ethical issue.)
Part Three: Application of an Ethical System to dilemma – showing an understanding of not only
the systems mechanics but application. (What ethical system or systems did I follow at the time.)
Part Four: What your course of action was (What did I do in response to my ethical situation?
Some students include this in parts one and two.)
Part Five: Whether the ethical system you have chose would have deemed your actions ‘moral’.
(Choosing another ethical system and arguing what this ethical system would determine in
situation – would it determine your actions were ethical or not – showing research and support)
Part Six: What you would do differently given another shot. (Conclusion based on your opinion.)
I will be putting particular weight on parts three, four and five of this paper. Consider a safe
guideline is that I will put 20% of the grade for this paper on part’s one and six and 90% of the
grade on parts three, four, and five.
Your final paper also must have the following components:
1. Title page
2. The research paper
3. Works Cited page
General Concerns:
Your biggest challenge is choosing an ethical dilemma that is specific enough to analyze.
Remember, these papers are held confidential and although names should be changed to protect
the innocent, I will not use this paper as a means to judge or persecute you. With this said,
choose a dilemma where you have the ability to gather facts or recall facts for ethical analysis. A
lot of thought should be put into this before ink gets to the page. Working on this the last week
of the semester will bring disaster. Use the tutoring lab in the library to its full potential and
meet with me as you see fit to help narrow your topic.
