1 HIST 266 Written Assignment #1 Analysis of an Article from a Scholarly Journal Due date: Feb. 14, 2022 (see syllabus for lateness policy) Instructions: **Before you start, make sure you have a good understanding of what scholarly journal articles are. Campion Librarian Elaina St. Onge will address this in our class on Jan. 31st . Steps: 1) Find an article from a scholarly journal relating to some aspect of the history of Western Europe in the period 1100-1400 CE/AD (an article about Western Europeans’ interactions with people in some other region would also be acceptable). The article needs to have been published within the last 25 years in order for you to get a sense of contemporary scholarly opinion about the topic. –Journal articles which are reports of archaeological excavations would not be appropriate choices for this assignment. You should be looking for an article written by a historian who was studying medieval documents (primary sources). –Use the techniques for finding articles as described by Ms. St. Onge. She has also prepared a LibGuide research guide (which will be posted on our URCourses page) which should be helpful in finding articles from scholarly journals. –**Please do not start working on the assignment until you have submitted the article information to me (by 5:00 p.m. on Feb. 7th, by sending me an e-mail through our URCourses page) and gotten a response from me stating that your article is indeed an appropriate choice for this assignment.*** **Please also note that each student has to pick an article different from the other students. Students will be allowed their choices on a first-come, first-serve basis. That is, if a student lets me know on Feb. 1st that they would like to analyze a particular article, and then another student suggests working on the same article on Feb. 2nd, the first student gets to analyze that particular article. Consequently, it would probably be a good thing to be ready to suggest an alternate article or two just in case your first choice has already been picked by another student. –Your chosen scholarly journal article must be at least 10 pages in length. Review articles or book reviews will not be eligible. Articles must be from scholarly, peer-reviewed journals accessed through the University of Regina library system. 2 **It would be a very good idea to read the article *before* you suggest to me that you would like to work on it. Are you sure you understand the author’s argument and analysis? If you’re not sure what the author is trying to prove and what their key points are, this wouldn’t be a good article for you to analyze for this assignment. 2) After reading the article, write a short analysis of the article. The minimum word count for the assignment should be no lower than 750 words and no more than 1500 words. You should be able to discuss briefly what the article is about (i.e., by summarizing) and what the author’s aims are by using your own words (i.e., by paraphrasing). Your brief summary of what the article is about should not constitute more than 30% of the assignment. Usage of direct quotations from the article should be minimal. At least 70% of your assignment should focus on analyzing the argument and key points of the author of the journal article. Your analysis should answer the following questions (please don’t repeat these questions in the text of your assignment, though): –Who is the author and which university or institute are they affiliated with? –What are the author’s stated aims for this article? Which questions are they trying to answer? –What is the scope of their analysis (that is, which time period(s) and geographic area(s) are they covering in this article)? –How does the author connect their research to research done by other scholars? –Which primary sources does the author use? What evidence do they use from these sources? What claims does the author make based on these sources? –What conclusions does the author reach in this article? –What is your own response to this article? Are you persuaded by the argument and by the evidence provided to support it? If so, why? If not, why not? Please note: –You will be expected to look up the meanings of words you are unfamiliar with. A dictionary you may find useful for this assignment is the Oxford English Dictionary (available through the LibGuide on URCourses for this course). –You are not meant to do additional research for this assignment. The goal is to analyze the article yourself. (That also means that you are not to collaborate with another student or anyone else on this assignment.) –Please write no fewer than 750 words and no more than 1500 words. Remember that being concise is a skill. 3 –Your assignment must be double-spaced in 12- or 14-point font (something like Times New Roman or Arial) with pages numbered. –Your name, the class name (HIST 266), and some form of title (even if it’s just “Written Assignment #1”) must be included on the first page of the assignment. Please also do a word count and put it on the title page. –Please also provide a complete citation for the article, in the style used by the Department of History (the Chicago Style of Citation—Notes/Bibliography form; see the link on the LibGuide), at the beginning of your assignment. –You will submit the assignment using the “Assignment” submission function on our URCourses page. (Please note that I do not accept assignments sent directly to my personal email address; only ones submitted through URCourses through the “Assignment” portal will be accepted.) You must submit your file as a pdf document. —This assignment is due on Feb. 14th, 2022 by 11:59 p.m. Late assignments will be accepted (with a deduction of 3% per day, including weekend days) until 11:59 p.m. on Feb. 21st, 2022. Outline assignments will not be accepted after Feb. 21st, 2022 unless you have been experiencing illness or family tragedy and we have discussed this before the deadline **************The First Written Assignment is a MANDATORY assignment for this course! That means if you do not hand in the assignment by Feb. 21st, 2022, you will receive a grade of NP (=40%) in this course.*********************** **Please note: each student is expected to have read and understood the section of the University of Regina Undergraduate Calendar on plagiarism and academic misconduct before undertaking this assignment: https://www.uregina.ca/student/registrar/resources-for-students/academiccalendars-and-schedule/undergraduate-calendar/assets/pdf/2020-21/Student-Code-of-Conductand-Right-to-Appeal.pdf Assignment aims: a) To help you develop skills –in using effective search strategies to find relevant sources in the university library catalogue –in summarizing content from a source and paraphrasing the ideas of an author in a concise way –in identifying the argument of a scholarly source and the evidence used to support the argument –in analyzing the argument of a scholarly source and reaching conclusions regarding how convincing the argument is –in assessing the evidence an author uses to support their claims 4 –in closely and critically reading a piece of academic writing –in writing clearly one’s own response to a scholarly source b) To help you understand how scholarly research in the area of history is conducted and how research results are disseminated in peer-reviewed scholarly journals.
