1) In your research methods course, you discussed Conceptualization & Operationalization in Measurement. Related to that is the discussion in Kappeler & Potters chapter 3 about how the failure to form clear typologies (p69) contributes to the misperceptions about missing children. Detail what the problem here is, what generally should be done to correct the issues, and, in your opinion, what the final typology should look like and why.

2) Runaway children are a social problem but it is a different problem than stranger abductions. Why, in your professional opinion, do we focus on stranger danger? Consider individuals, institutions, etc. What would it mean in terms of resources, focus, and our feelings, to focus on the runaway issue instead? Should we? Why/not?

3) Kappeler & Potter (see pgs 76-77) discuss four or five* unintended consequences of media focus on stranger danger. Which of these are the most problematic? Why? Which seems the easiest to fix? How would we do that?

4) We get accustomed to the risk/cost of things over time. For example, it has been said that if automobiles did not already exist and we knew the death and injury rate in advance, there is no way that the public would accept the risk v. reward. The risk from automobiles is huge and we have alternatives such as public transportation but it is hard to imagine a neighbor calling CPS just because a mother was transporting a child in a car (see pg 81+ for the relevant comparison here). In your opinion, why are some risks accepted or ignored while others become defined as major social problems? Perform some light internet research (use fact-checked sources) on the everyday things most dangerous to children (drowning, carbon monoxide, cars, etc), and figure out a) how much more likely one or two of these are to be a danger to a child than a stranger abduction and b) what you think we ought to do about it, and why.

5) Kappeler & Potter argue that applying pedophile laws & sex offender registration restrictions to consensual teenage sexual activity is a major unintended consequence of our concern about sex offenses. A few states have begun to try and remedy some of the laws but it is also true that new laws get created constantly and pedophiles are a popular target. Are the unintended consequences of these laws worth it? Why or why not?
