Instructions: All essays should be submitted to the Turnitin portal in a single Word document. Since you will be using your notes and the readings, please cite all research (including page numbers!).[1] You may use Smarthistory and the Met Museum essays. Do not use Wikipedia or any other source. The required readings and videos give you plenty of content to work with, but you can use additional Met Museum and Smarthistory material if youd like. For all questions, you may only focus on an artwork one time. Spell- and grammar-check. Including labeled images is required for each answer. Please refer to any previous comments on your assignments from this course.
1. Comparison (2 comparisons, 3.5 points each)
Please include 2 labeled images in each response. Make sure your essay includes a visual description of each artwork, and a balanced analysis comparing the similarities and differences between the two.
Chose two of the following pairs:
a. Architecture.
o Newgrange burial mound (module 1) vs. Mycenaean beehive tomb (Treasury of Atreus) (module 4)
o Choose a Christian church (modules 8-12) and compare it with one of the great mosques (modules 9, 12)
b. Sculpture.
o St. Foy (module 10) vs. Reliquary of Jeanne DEvreux (module 11)
o Veristic head (module 6) vs. the Ife Head (module 12)
c. Relief. Lamassus (module 2) vs. the Lions Gate (module 4)
d. Images of the crucifixion. The true cross reliquary (module 8) and the Morgan Gospel cover (module 10)
e. Art of the Book. Koran page with calligraphy (module 9) and compare with Bible page (module 8)
f. Art of Death. Choose two funerary monuments
2. Short answer I: (2 short answers, 2.5 points each)
Choose 2 of the following 5 questions (or 2 for extra credit):
a. Propaganda: Choose an artwork from one of the module handouts that expresses propaganda and visually analyze it from this perspective. How did the artist manipulate or apply certain details to persuade the viewer of something in the artwork? Are these propaganda features specific to this civilization? Explain.
b. Military power: Select artwork from one of the module handouts that express military power and visually analyze it from this perspective. What details were added by the artist to convince the viewer of the martial authority proposed in the artwork? Are certain details specific to this civilization? Are others more universal? Note comparisons.
c. Architecture: select an architectural structure (like Stonehenge, Hagia Sophia, Notre Dame de Paris, Great Mosque of Djenn): discuss the function of the building, then discuss the architectural techniques used to make it, and its decoration. How did artists adapt their decorations to the form of the building or rather, how did they optimize ornamenting the structure?
d. The Pantheon: Discuss the Pantheons architectural techniques and the buildings function. How are these connected through imperial propaganda? Why is there a hole where the keystone should be? Compare with another building with a similar roof.
e. Faith. Select an artwork that exemplifies the patron, viewer, or makers devotion to a religion (or philosophy, like Buddhism). How is faith expressed in this artwork visually? In the way, the space or image is created? Your answer should analyze the object or monument using the skills that youve gained in this class, not from outside research.
3. Short answer II: The Parthenon (3 points)
The Temple of Athena Parthenon is a complex building created during a turbulent time. In your essay please focus your essay on two of the following themes, clearly identifying which two are your focus:
a. sculptural decoration
b. architectural form and techniques
c. historical background with Persia and/or Sparta
d. optical refinements and the use of color on the building
Do not summarize a Wikipedia article. Choose two different features and discuss them. Review the Smarthistory essay and video. Here are some references:
