Discussion Prompt
Look at Theory on Basic and Derivative moral consideration. Imagine being in conversation with a Native American Elder – such as was involved with many others protesting the Dakota gas pipeline recently – and present which kind of consideration the elder would take. Put yourself in the elder’s place and present a case. Then critically examine how it contrasts with our anthropocentric view of the environment. Be certain to define all relevant terms. (Hint: the Jain tradition and its declaration on nature discussed by Holmes in the chapter will be a good guide).
