For this assignment, you must find and read a peer-reviewed academic essay and compose a comprehensive and rigorous summary of its contents. This should include bibliographic/publication details, a clear statement of the article’s topic and thesis, highlights of its argument, and relevant biographical information about the author. You may include short quotations from the source as required to provide evidence for major claims; however, the bulk of the writing should be composed in the modes of summary and paraphrase. One strategy for defining a structure to your Article Summary is to provide a wide-angle, "bird’s eye" view on the essay as a whole – in one or several ways – and then "zoom in" on a particular part or feature of the essay that you consider interesting.
The Article Summary, in short, engages with a piece of writing primarily on a semantic level, testing your ability to understand and describe what an article says - its meaning. In the next assignment, the Summary and Analysis, you’ll start to add in rhetorical considerations, looking more at what a piece of writing does - how it positions itself in relation to its subject and context, what type of evidence it relies on, how convincing it is, and so on – in addition to what it says.
