Select a specific experience of a group process aimed at addressing conflict and / or addressing a difficult issue in
some way. It can be a one-off meeting or a longer process with different iterations. In a paragraph or two,
provide a brief overview of the context for the process. You should have firsthand experience of the process in
any role and should adopt a stance of analytic empathy to consider issues from the likely perspective of different
stakeholders involved.
you are encouraged to then assess the process design and the outcomes focusing on the dynamics most
relevant to the context. Please consider the following questions (not necessarily in this order), answering to the
best of your knowledge / from your perspective.
What was the purpose of the process? Was it clear to all involved? Any issues arising about the
purpose?
How was it framed? Was the framing conducive to the purpose? Were there any controversies over the
framing or alternatives that might have opened the space for engagement more inclusively and / or
powerfully.
Consultation and assessment phase. From your knowledge, how were stakeholders consulted? Was it
the right mix of people to reflect the diversity of
How was the process convened under what auspices and around what context? Where there any
issues or dynamics around the legitimacy of the convenors? How did this help to or fail to address
concerns of stakeholders?
How was participation in the process managed? What kinds of stakeholders participated and how? In
more phased processes, did people participate differently at different points in the process? Was there
any preparatory process for different stakeholder groups?
How would you describe the design of the process overall and / or of the specific meeting? Thinking of
some of the process methodologies weve studied, how would you identify the process design enacted
in this experience? Was it appropriate for the context and the purpose?
Was there a facilitator (or team?) if so, how did their role influence the ways the process unfolded?
In your view, what were the implicit theories of change and theories of practice that were enacted by
the convenors (and facilitators, if relevant)?
Conclude with your thoughts on what you consider to be the key decisions and strategies evident in this process.
Identify whether you believe that, on balance, these moves were wise and / or what might have been done
differently to lead to outcomes that supported more restorative and transformative change.
