Step 1: Read through chapter one of Michael Roberto’s book, Why Great Leaders Don’t
Take Yes for an Answer: The Leadership Challenge
, [http://www.govleaders.org/no_yes_men.htm].
Step 2: Write a paper [3-4 pages (or more if needed), 1” margins, double-spaced, 12-point font] that answers the following questions/topics:

  • According to Michael Roberto, what are the reasons that so few organizational leaders “can master the social and political dynamic of decision making”? In addition to identifying those reasons, briefly explain why Roberto makes those claims.

  • Roberto lists five myths (and five realities) regarding leadership and decision making. Of these five myths-realities, describe the one that was most relevant to you in your quest to become a better leader AND explain why.

  • Of the five myths-realities, describe the one you found the least relevant to you in your quest to become a better leader AND explain why.

  • Identify the five sources of difficulty that leaders must overcome as they shape and direct decision processes and provide a brief explanation/summary for EACH of those five sources of difficulty (each explanation/summary should be a couple of sentences that encapsulates the main ideas so that they could be understood by someone not familiar with leadership principles). In addition to these five sources of difficulty, what does Roberto see as the “more fundamental reason” why many leaders fail to make and implement decisions successfully? Explain why Roberto takes this position.
The paper does not need to be written as an essay (i.e. you do not need to include a title page or page headers). You can simply list the four topics stated above (or include section headings) and provide your explanation and analysis. To help prevent plagiarism, you will need to provide APA-formatted in-text citations and a References page that lists APA-formatted citations for each source cited in your paper. Be sure that your paper fully explains the ideas presented, using points from the Roberto reading, as well as our class readings, including the textbooks. To enhance your analysis, make specific connections with ideas in the reading materials in this learning module and/or previous learning modules, as well as the Margaret Heffernan TED Talk video in the discussions for this learning moduleAvoid merely copying quotes from the Roberto article; be sure that your paper is written in your own words — as highlighted in the grading rubric, you should use direct quotes judiciously to support (rather than in place of) your explanation and analysis.
