I searched for articles related to women and substance use disorders in Guam. The peer-reviewed article, “Countering correctional discourse,” studied female prisoners that took part in the RSAT (Residential Substance Abuse Treatment Program) at the Guam Department of Corrections. I searched for the same subject through a search engine and found a recent article from the Guam Daily Post, a local newspaper, presenting information gathered from a virtual forum on women and substance abuse here in Guam
The peer-reviewed article was more informative as to why females turn to drugs. It also expanded on prisoners’ attitudes about treatment. Although many points are relevant to issues still presented today, the article is over a decade old. It covers women who have already met consequences from or related to their use and misuse of substances. The article from the Guam Daily Post was brief but provided current data. It reflected current attitudes toward the availability of treatment and the willingness to seek it. I found the peer-reviewed information to be more helpful in studying the treatment of substance use disorders for Guam’s women.
Both articles led me to conclude that we should see substance use disorders from a mental health perspective before seeing them as mere criminal acts. Guam needs more substance use treatment facilities and programs to help keep individuals and their families healthy and out of the criminal justice system.
