rite a summary of Bettelheim’s article that captures the main ideas. Bettelheim is basically doing an interpretation of the fairy tale “Cinderella.” Notice how he applies a theory from psychology/psychoanalysis to his interpretation. How do you see that theory informing his interpretation?

First, read his essay and take some notes down where you see significant points he makes.

To write the summary, see if you can sum up in a statement or two the overall gist of the article. Start your summary out with that statement. Then fill in his main supporting details to round out your summary.

To capture the main intent of the article, you would need to include not only his notion of Cinderella working through sibling rivalry but also something about the theory that he applies. Make sure that your summary tells readers what his main ideas are–that would have to include the framework of his article or, in other words, how he applies the theory. See the points below on importance of summary in academic writing. About 3/4 of a typed page would allow a good summary of main ideas for Bettelheim’s article.

How and Why Summary is Used

Writers must use the ideas of others when they investigate an issue. They may use these ideas to help support their points. They may challenge these ideas. They may need to compare and contrast ideas from different writers. In order to do these things, they need to summarize clearly and accurately the ideas of the writers. While they may include only passages from an article (and not the whole article), they still need to be able to understand the writers’ full positions. Practicing summarizing helps us make sure we fully understand someone’s position (you must understand in order to repeat someone’s position in summary of paraphrase). It also helps us use these ideas well in our own essays.

Important tests of a good summary

  • Have I accurately captured the article’s ideas?   (Or have I misrepresented what the writer actually said?)
  • Have I given enough of the context?  (Or have I taken a point out of context and thus misrepresented it that way?)
  • Have I thoroughly paraphrased or summarized in my own words?  (Or have I copied it word for word without indicating I did with quotation marks?)
  • Have I used quotation marks around any ideas I want to keep in the writer’s own words?   (Or have I included verbatim passages without quotation marks?)
  • Have I quoted only occasionally and for a good reason?  (Or do I quote nearly everything?)
