readings focus on the monetary aspects of health care and research. The first reading, The case for allowing kidney sales, by Janet Radcliffe-Richards et al challenges the notion that buying organs from live vendors should be prohibited and raises questions about how much financial control over ones own body does an individual have. Currently it is legal to sell renewable tissue such as blood products or gametes in the United States, but not non renewable such as a kidney. The authors go step by step through the most common arguments against allowing the sale of kidneys and give their opinion on why they are not valid. While they ultimately do not express an opinion on the topic, they believe the current arguments against the sale of organs do not justify its prohibition

The second reading, Paying tissue donors: The legacy of Henrietta Lacks, deals with the question, how much financial claim do individuals have to tissue after it has been donated. The reading focuses around the case of Henrietta Lacks who was treated for cervical cancer at Johns Hopkins in the 1950s. Cells from her cancer were eventually used to make an immortal cell line that is used in research labs throughout the world today. Even though these cells have become very lucrative, neither her nor her family received any form of compensation. Even today in the age of informed consent (which was not around during Henriettas time) when a patient agrees to have a tissue sample taken, the consent very often acknowledges that their tissue maybe used for research or educational purposes. While the overwhelming majority of these tissue samples do not develop into lucrative cell lines like Henrietta Lacks did, some will. This raises many questions about compensation and ownership, which the authors very nicely delve into.

We are also about half way through the Dr. Death podcast. So far we have seen what happens to patients when the rules in place to ensure their safety fail. We have not yet seen what, if any, repercussions Dr. Duntsch will face. What are some things that surprised you so far about the Texas medical system and the laws in place for patient safety.

Please feel free to react and give your opinion on any topic from the readings or beyond that are of interest to you.
