For the cumulative Final Essay, you will be tasked with providing a critical reading of one of the five media texts provided. Overall, you must read your chosen media text to answer the question: What does your media text communicate about the contemporary relationship between Black Masculinity and Sport? (i.e., regarding sport, race, gender, and the intersections as discussed through any of the topics in this course). In answering this question, you must construct an argument that supports your interpretation, drawing upon your knowledge attained from this course and supported by the critical media methodology (languages of media, positions of enunciation, semiotics, discourse and cultural meanings).

The essay should be written formally and consist of between 1500-2000ish words. It should be double spaced. For some texts, you may have to conduct some additional research to ascertain the context of the media text. While you are not required to bring in outside sources, you will be required to cite at least three (3) peer-reviewed academic journal articles or books/book chapters (readings that have been assigned in this course are eligible and encouraged in fulfilling this requirement). You also are encouraged to draw on lecture material when and if necessary (although it should only supplement your original analysis rather than replace it. The most effective incorporation of sources will entail paraphrasing and clear application to your argument, rather than a simple copy and paste of a block quote. You can cite lecture if necessary (as “(Wallace, 2021)” in-text and reference in some consistent way). Citations should be in proper APA style and include references (see https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/section/2/10/). Essays must state in heading/title which media text option they have chosen. Overall, your essays will be evaluated with specific focus on the extent to which you 1) demonstrate an in-depth knowledge/understanding of course content; 2) exhibit the skills to analyze sport media in a critical, thoughtful, original, and informed manner; 3) integrate academic research/readings in support of your argument, and 4) communicate your ideas in a clear, organized, and convincing manner.

Essays must be submitted online via ELMS as a Word doc (.doc; .docx) or PDF (.pdf).
