(Prompt itself )

Examine cancel culture in your essay. Does cancel culture limit the free exchange of ideas? Is cancel culture an extreme form of censorship? Is “cancel culture” an exaggerated description of responses to injustice that are long overdue? How do you define cancel culture? When is cancellation an appropriate response, and when it is going too far? In executing your essay, you are welcome to examine an item or person that has been cancelled. Explain why that person or item did and/or did not warrant the critical response that was received.

  1. Intro/thesis: Let’s be clear: Dr. Seuss wasn’t cancelled. His publishers simply decided to embrace inclusive norms and reject racist caricatures.

  2. Point 1 supporting thesis: We can recognize more easily now what readers could not see in the past, namely that Dr. Seuss’ drawings include racist caricatures of Asians.

  3. Point 2: The decision to stop publishing the works came from the Seuss estate itself, not from an angry mob.

  4. Point 3: Some parts of Dr. Seuss’s work should be protected as part of the historical record, but some parts of his work need to be retired.

  5. Counterargument: Perhaps the drawings in Seuss’ books could have been edited, thus preserving the texts for the historical record.

  6. Conclusion: Even beloved authors make mistakes in their work. It’s time to stop circulating materials that promote harmful stereotypes.
