Analyzing a case study is a method that involves an up-close, in-depth and detailed investigation of a particular real-life example. It allows us to see how others have approached a situation. We can see how people in that situation communicated and made decisions. We can think about what we might have done in their situation. This method used extensively in business schools (Harvard uses it a lot) and other disciplines. It gives us practice at what it might be like in the world of work without making the mistakes that see others have made.
This first case study takes place in FedEx, a busy and demanding business.
1. Read the case study
2. Go back and reread the case study noting these things:
-Identify any problems with decision making
-Analyze the choices and the way decisions were made (USE your readings and lecture materials to deconstruct what went on at FedEx)
-Propose ways that the decision process might have been improved. Think of measurable behavior changes not vague generalizations. Look at different points of view of the different roles in the organization.
3. Write your summary in 2-3 pages (double spaced) with a brief introduction of the case. Then address each of these questions in depth with citations from our materials. Describe your observations in enough detail that a person who has not read the case study learns what happened. A reference page is necessary using APA format. The analysis of the problem with decision making is the most important section.
