Case Study: Calexi

Calexi is an 11-year-old female with no siblings. Her mom and dad recently divorced, and she is living with her dad. Her mother did not attempt to obtain custody, so Calexi moved in with her dad and they moved to a different state for a fresh start.  Calexi does not feel close to her father, as they have little in common and he is often busy with work. Calexi’s mother never wanted children and she has always been emotionally distant. Both her mother and father have always worked long hours, leaving her with babysitters or forcing her to attend after school programs.  Calexi has always been shy and reserved, making it very difficult for her to make and keep friends. She has never really had any close friends, and the ones that she has made were often mean or took advantage of her.

After moving with her father, Calexi began attending a new middle school, and because she finds school boring and uninteresting, she typically goes through the motions at school. Calexi’s grades are average, doing just enough in order to get by.  After school, she sits by herself either outside or somewhere in a store, typically returning home just after dark. Her dad never questions where she is or has been.

According to the school nurse, Calexi is a bit underweight but she does not consider her malnourished. When asked about her eating habits, Calexi shared that she eats when she is hungry and when she does eat, she eats what she wants, which typically includes fast food. Calexi’s dad was called because mall security found her sleeping in one of the dressing rooms in one of the stores after closing. This was the third time security has found her; however, each time they let her go.  He reported this third incident. Her dad really doesn’t have time to deal with Calexi misbehaving, and his approach has been telling her to “get in line.”

  • Based on the information shared, assess and apply three human development theories to the case study as it relates to Calexi’s behavior.

  • Explain what might be influencing Calexi’s behavior at 11 years old based on the information provided. The following are some items to include in your assessment; however, these are not the only items you can address:

    • Why do you think Calexi is spending time away from home?

    • How is her school performance being impacted by her situation?

    • Why do you think she is bored and finding school uninteresting?

    • Do you think her weight is a concern?  If so, what might be contributing?

    • How do you think the divorce may be impacting Calexi’s behavior?

All assessments must be substantiated by information from the case study and research. As an example, “Alice has been behaving inappropriately during school, as demonstrated by her outbursts in class. She has observed her parents’ constantly fighting and learned this social behavior (cite research that supports social influence on behavior through observation).”
