Introduction: This assignment will be used to determine your understanding of how crimes can
be affected by faulty evidence. This assignment will allow you to demonstrate your knowledge
of the evidence necessary to convict a defendant of a crime, and how that evidence can be
tampered with.
Directions: Please submit a 3-4-page case study comparing and contrasting the two
Massachusetts Drug Lab Scandals involving chemists, Annie Dookhan, and Sonja Farak. A great
resource for this paper is the documentary on Netflix, “How to Fix a Drug Scandal.” However,
there are plenty of online resources involving these two scandals. The case study should be typed
(double-spaced). Please use at least three citations for the assignment. The format of the case
study should include an introduction, analysis, and conclusion. The case study should answer the
following questions:
1. How were the drug lab scandals different?
2. How were the drug lab scandals similar?
3. How was the evidence and the crimes that that the defendants were charged with affected
by the drug lab scandals?
4. Do you believe the cases involving Annie Dookhan and Sonja Farak should have been
dismissed? Why or Why not?
Scoring:
Format of case study: 2 points (must be double spaced, typed, introduction, analysis, and
conclusion)
Citations: 2 point (must have at least two citations)
Answers questions 1-4: 2 points (answers must be clear and concise)
Quality of Analysis: 4 points (must show understanding of the law and be able to compare and
contrast the two cases)
