After viewing the film, write a review of the film from a historical perspective. Historians love to critique historical films, but the general public tend to learn a lot about the past from film and television.

  1. Your review should include an introduction, body and conclusion. It must be a minimum of 500 words.
  2. In the introduction, include your assessment or evaluation of the film as a source of historical information. This is your thesis.
  3. Use at least THREE specific scenes from the film as examples to illustrate your assessment.
  4. Remember to include citations where necessary. When quoting the film or referring to a specific scene, include the time stamp of where it is found in the movie. If you fail to include a necessary citation, the paper will lose 1 point.
  5. As always double space (1/2 point deduction if not double spaced).
  6. See the rubric
  7. In order to come up with your evaluation/thesis, consider the following questions (you do not have to answer all of them and you should not include answers in a list form):

    • What is the central topic of this film?
    • What did you learn about the Cuban Revolution from the film?
    • What did you learn about Che Guevara?
    • What didnt you learn that would have been useful to know?
    • What is the central message of the film? (Does the director have a particular interpretation of Che? The Revolution? Revolution in general? Fidel Castro?)
    • Consider the effectiveness of the film in communicating its message. As a tool of communication, what are its strengths and weaknesses?
    • Note how camera angles, lighting, music, narration, and/or editing contribute to creating an atmosphere in this film. What is the mood or tone of the film? How is the mood conveyed?
    • Does this film appeal to the viewer’s reason or emotion? How does it make you feel?
    • What are some images or scenes from the film that stand out in your mind. Note why they impressed you and how they relate to themes explored in the film.
    • How do you think the filmmaker represented Che? How did he want you to react to Che? Why?
    • Do you see evidence of Defronzos five factors at work in the film? Be specific. Give examples. (Defronzos five factors were covered in the Defining Revolutions unit of the course in the second lecture, What causes revolutions?)
    • Do you think it is more useful for history students to watch a documentary film or a historical drama like Che?
    • In general, do you find the use of historical dramas (as a genre of film) to be helpful in learning about history?
