Your book reviews should include the following:
1. Introduction with a thesis statement. Your intro should provide a brief overview of the
book/subject. Your thesis statement should be at the end of your intro and lay out the main points
of your review. Your main points may include what the central arguments of the book were,
what its major strengths/weaknesses were, what your overall reaction to the book was (e.g. what
you found interesting or important), etc.
2. Body paragraphs. Your body paragraphs should support your thesis with specific
points/examples from the book, and with your own thoughts where appropriate. While you may
want to include a few quotes, be careful not to go overboard – I want to read your writing. If you
use a quote, make sure it serves a specific purpose like supporting one of your points, or make
sure you comment on the significance of the quote.
3. Conclusion. Your conclusion should reiterate the major points that you have made about the
book throughout your paper, and briefly assess the book.
Be sure to…
– Include a simple page number citation when necessary, or state where the author discusses a
certain topic. A few example sentences:
Hochschild notes several examples of forced labor that were used in the Congo (18).
In chapter 3, Adam Hochschild explains several brutal methods of forced labor…
– Use proper grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
– Use 12pt font, Times New Roman, double spaced. (If you havent noticed, you will basically be
doing everything like this for the rest of your academic life.)
– Plagiarism will result in failure for the assignment and potential sanctions after the dean
