This Civic Literacy Essay is based on the accompanying documents. The question is designed to test your ability to work with historical documents. Some of these documents have been edited for the purpose of this question. As you analyze the documents, take into account the source of each document and any point of view that may be presented in the document. Keep in mind that the language and images used in a document may reflect the historical context of the time in which it was created.
Historical Context: Throughout United States history, many constitutional and civic issues have been debated by Americans. These debates have resulted in efforts by individuals, groups, and governments to address these issues. These efforts have achieved varying degrees of success. One of these constitutional and civic issues is presidential power.
Task: Read and analyze the documents. Using information from the documents and your knowledge of United States history, write an essay in which you
● Describe the historical circumstances surrounding this constitutional or civic issue
● Explain efforts to address this constitutional or civic issue by individuals, groups, and/or governments
● Discuss the impact of the efforts on the United States and/or American society Describe means “to illustrate something in words or tell about it”
Explain means “to make plain or understandable; to give reasons for or causes of; to show the logical development or relationship of”
Discuss means “to make observations about something using facts, reasoning, and argument; to present in some detail”
1. You must answer the short response questions first on a separate page.
2. Your paper must be 3 pages long and typed (TNR size 12 font, double spaced).
3. Your paper must be handed in on the due date unless you are absent. It will not be
accepted after that, and if you are absent, the paper must be handed in to me the first
day you are back at school.
4. Your paper must have a thesis statement (argument) on the cover, as well as your name,
class, due date.
5. Your paper must also contain a bibliography in proper format citations, with proper
margins and spacing, and adhere to the rubric.
6. Use 3 outside sources.
7. Factual evidence must be cited within the paper itself.
8. All papers must be submitted in two ways. Your paper will be submitted on blackbaud
to a plagiarism site to check for its originality. On the due date, the paper will then be submitted to me on Google classroom. Any paper not submitted on blackbaud will receive a ZERO
