This project has absorbed your attention so completely and for so long that even your pet dog has left you. You are now sitting down to write the last few pages–the vital conclusion–and you want to make sure to get it all right. You are agonizing over several questions and themes concerning the Civil Waranswer them here.
a. Were the costs of the Civil War worth the results to the nation as a whole? Would the country have been better off if President Lincoln had simply let the South go in 1861? What would have been wrong with that decision? What issues were settled by the war, what was gained, and how did those gains justify all the death and carnage? Explain your answers in some detail.
b. Is the U.S. Civil War still important to us now? Does it still matter in 2021? Should we continue to study this conflict? Why or why not? Be specific.
c). Did reading This Republic of Suffering change your own perception of the Civil War and/or even war itself? In an even broader sense, have we glamorized the American Civil War too much: the battles, the generals, the weapons, the military strategies, and the heroic violence? Did this book change your views on any of that? Explain your answer.P.S. Since the Civil War is the culminating event in the class, I will be expecting you to use what you have learned in the entire course. This is your opportunity to synthesize and connect all the different ideas and threads in this course. Try your best to do that.
