This assignment consists of two parts: First, a detailed chart in which you specifically name the relevant forms of Capital (economic goods/conditions), Law (legislation, enforcement, etc), and Ideology (ideas/language/images) that were used to racialize the Chicana/o/x subject in the 19th century. Second, a written paragraph of 350-500 words, utilizing a key quote from the reading to describe and analyze the connections you see in how these forces work together. You may collaborate with others and seek out feedback, but you may not submit identical charts. Each person’s examples should be unique to their analysis, as should their key quote. There are dozens of examples you could choose from, so be sure your work is your own.

Relevant Readings: Horseman, Takaki, and Foley in Week 3 Module/Week 3 Files Folder

Part One: CLI Chart

Your task is to identify how historical forms of capital, law, and ideology interact and relate and how those forces came together to create the Chicano/a subject during this period. Any or all week three readings may be used for this assignment to identify three forms of Capital, three mechanisms of Law, and three examples of Ideological discourses. The chart should therefore have at least nine examples from across the week three readings.

1)In the Capital category, you are to list the specific economic goods at stake (such as land, crops, ports, labor, etc.) and the systems of economic disparity produced to manage them (slavery, land dispossession, dual-wage, etc.) Include Author & Page Numbers

2) In the Law category, list the legal factors that you come across (laws, treaties, court decisions, etc.) and the forms of force that are used to uphold them (policing, extra-legal violences, etc.) Include Author & Page Numbers

3) In the ideology/discourse category, consider how capital and state interests are naturalized; name the characteristics or binaries of the prevailing ideology and/or discourse and, when possible, list who constructed the ideas and who with power perpetuated this discourse. Include Author & Page Numbers

Part 2: Write-up

For the 350-500 word write-up you should first select a quote that touches on some of the CLI forces you’ve listed in your chart. You may choose any quote from any week 3 readingThe quote should be about 2 sentences or shorter and will NOT count toward your final word count. After you’ve provided a key quote, you will spend the space allotted describing how the historically specific forms of capital, laws, and ideologies that you identified in your chart interact with and reinforce one another and why each is vital to understanding the legal-economic-dicursive production of racialized difference within white supremacy. Be as focused and concise as possible.

This sample chart includes examples that are not from week 3 readings, but they do represent the kinds of examples we’re looking for in each column. Replace these examples with ones of your own that come directly from the week 3 content.
