  1. Explain the statement, “The goal of interpersonal communication is to understand, not to agree.” Use at least two concepts from this lesson to describe how understanding this statement could change the way people engage in conflict resolution.
  2. Think back to the last conflict you had in one of your relationships. Which conflict management style did you utilize the most during this conflict and which type of conflict would you categorize it as? Does the conflict management style you utilized change when you are in conflict with a different person or in a different type of conflict? Why or why not?
  3. Of the five conflict management styles, is there one that you use more often than others? Why or why not? Do you think people are predisposed to one style over the others based on their personality or other characteristics? If so, what personality traits do you think would lead a person to each style?
  4. Of the conflict triggers discussed (criticism, demands, cumulative annoyance, rejection, one-upping, and mindreading) which one do you find most often triggers a negative reaction from you? What strategies can you use to better manage the trigger and more effectively manage conflict?
  5. Think of the last time you had to negotiate in an interpersonal relationship. Explain in detail what occurred in each step of the negotiation process and what the final outcome was. Assess whether the negotiation had a positive or negative outcome and the reason for that outcome.
