1. I think that Yvon Chouinard has very clearly established that Patagonia as a copany will do everything in its power to remain as sustainable as possible. As mentioned in the article, Patagonia has conducted many tests to track the polution produced in each material they use. On top of that, they continue to tweak and engineer their system to make the materials as clean-ly as possible. I think many people realize the quality Patagonia offers as well as their values and this is why they can demand the prices that they do. This both enforces environmental sustainability and practicality.

2. I think Patagonia would be able to take advantage of alot of new oppurtunities to spread thier name. One initial thought that I came up with was to try and become present among student athletes. As many people know, college student athletes are now able to take advantage of the NCAAs new NIL (name, image, likeness) policy. I think that through marketing Patagonia products through these athletes it will bring in an entirely new demographic to their target market. On top of sponsoring college student athletes, I think Patagonia could gain alot of attention for sponsoring events, especially rockclimbing, fishing, surfing, skiing, and water sports events.

3. I think that any comany cant become corrupt under a specific style of management. You can take Arthur Andersen for example, Arthur Andersen started as aprivate accounting firm that was born on the ideals of truth and virtue. As time went on and the owner died, management changed as well. This management was not opposed in cutting corners, they became tied up in the infamous Enron scandal back in the late 90s as a result.  The difference between companies that genuinely care about ethics and companies that do so superficially is simply consistency. For example, many companies will make public displays of their charity to impress potential consumers even if it is once a year, where as companies that genuinely care will not make a spectacle of their donations (similar to the pharisees in the bible with doing good deeds).

  1. Patagonia continues to prove that a company can find success and be very profitable, while also staying sustainable. I think that Patagonia puts a lot of time into the process of deciding which products to offer so that the outcomes will be both business practical and environmentally friendly. I think Patagonia should make sure to incorporate the decision-making process. These steps are to identify and define the problem, generate and evaluate alternative course of action, decide on a preferred course of action, take action to implement the decision, and evaluate reasoning. For Patagonia, each of these steps will require consideration for the business itself as well as the environment. It all starts with Yvon Chouinard. From the get-go, Chouinard set out for his business to consist of high-quality outdoor wear, while placing high value on environmental responsibility. While the company continues to find new ways to make products more sustainable, this was something they have done since the start of Patagonia. This puts them at an advantage over other clothing companies who are trying to play catch up and be more sustainable. The culture that has been set in place by Chouinard serves as a solid foundation for decision making. Then, when it really comes down to making business decisions and environmentally friendly decisions, the leadership that they have in place needs to make sure that the decisions made align with the companies’ values and mission. To ensure that Chouinards positive impact is felt long after he leaves, he needs to make sure his communication is clear about what his expectations are and the plans he has in the future. The people below him should have similar goals and the same mission as him and be able to pick up right where he leaves off. He can also start putting people in positions to make big decisions for the company, as a means to practice for the future.

  2. If Yvon Chouinard came to me asking for a proposal to drive Patagonias future, there are several items I would include in the agenda. I would first make sure I am implementing a planning process with the steps mentioned in chapter 4. I think Patagonia is already at the forefront of well-respected companies with sustainable practices. A forward looking sustainability agenda could begin to expand the markets that Patagonia is a part of. Also, I think the company can find new ways to encourage its customers to engage in more sustainable practices themselves. The company is very sustainable, but I dont think that everyone who buys the products would be able to identify areas in their lives where they can say the same.

3.I believe that even in a company like Patagonia, ethics could lose out to greed. Unfortunately, there have been so many scandals involving companies that make poor decisions due to the desire to make larger profits. I do think that it is a lot less likely with a company like Patagonia, but it is not out of the question. Volkswagen is an example of a company that chose to sacrifice ethics to save money. The company cheated tests done by the US Environmental Protection Agency by using software that would detect when the cars were under tests. The cars would appear to comply with the standards set in place when in reality they were able to turn this setting off on the road, and the car would be emitting copious amounts of nitrogen dioxide (40x the limit while driving). They did not want to follow these rules because it meant increased costs and a lower fuel economy, which would result in lower sales. These unethical acts all came from a place of greed. It is evident that ethics and social responsibility were not at the core of Volkswagen.

  1. Patagonia is a great example of a successful company. Patagonia specializes in selling outdoor clothing and gear. Founder Yvon Chouinard is driven by ethics, he holds moral principles that set standards for good or bad, or right or wrong. Chouinard conducts sanitary and safe business practices. On Patagonias website they list their core values. They aspire for their clothing to reflect their morals and beliefs by using recyclable material. Although the prices are high, the company confirms that their customers are paying for quality, handmade, and durable material. By selling uniquely made products, the company is able to sell exclusive and business practical items. As discussed in the chapter, a sustainable business is one that refers to firms that operate in ways that both meet the needs of customers and protect or advance the well-being of our natural environment. Patagonia can be classified as a sustainable business because they care for the environment and the satisfaction of their customers. The company aims to protect nature while maintaining cultural relativism. Culture relativism states that no cultures ethics are superior. Patagonia recognizes this and implements ethics that are widely practiced by all cultures. The company has also established a code of ethics that formally states the values and principles members are expected to display. After Chouinard leaves the company will company will continue his practices because they hold core values and ethics that he established. The company has gained success by producing environmentally friendly, green, and unique items. Customers are bound to show loyalty to businesses that uphold values, satisfy their needs, and make them feel inclusive. Success in business can be obtained through skill sets and the prioritization of a clientele base. By maintaining stability, integrity, and confidence within products, businesses will continue to attract customers.

  1. If Yvon Chouinard asked me to compose a proposal I would assure myself that I honor his beliefs and values. In the agenda I would make sure that Patagonia continues to be environmentally friendly, clean, and effective for the outdoors. In order to accomplish tasks in a timely manner I would send emails to employees and hold frequent meetings where we could discuss any questions or concerns. I would suggest clothing recycling bins; customers would be able to donate old clothes and Patagonia would recycle the material and come up with new designs while keeping up with current trends. Since trends are constantly changing, this program would be effective because used clothing can be upcycled and resold. Since I would be chosen to propose something to the founder of the company I would make sure that I am inspired by ethical conduct by having realistic and achievable performance goals rather than impossible ones. In the company’s new agenda, I would arrange meetings with our suppliers to make sure that they are conducting business ethically, I would confront Chouinard with concerns about suspicious employee behavior, and I would continue to make sure that our quality is up to standards and unique. Patagonias future will be celebrated by looking for ways to improve the company, maintaining an ethical work environment, strengthening our core values, and being open to change. Patagonia should observe customers’ needs and wants and satisfy them while upholding their core values. In the past the company has gained success by being transparent and honest with their customers, in the future they can continue to be successful by establishing new programs that are innovative and correspondent with company morals.

  1. Ethics are defined as well-thought-out personal rules and strategies for ethical decision making that give high priority to virtues like honesty, fairness, integrity, and self-respect. Patagonia is a company that honors ethics and encourages it amongst all of its employees. Like the chapter discussed, training can strengthen personal ethics because our mentality shifts from careless to cautious and considerate of what is right and wrong. Individuals think of the consequences bad ethics can lead to and make their decisions based on what they feel is best. Ethics could definitely lose out to greed because people tend to put their self-interests first. Regardless of success, wealth, or favoritism, corrupt individuals will seek more and become engulfed with greed. Socap Digital published an article in which they interviewed a former employee of Patagonia, Rose Marcario. Marcario is defined as a cautious leader, because she was falling into the realms of greed but she managed to resist. Marcario remembers feeling a divide between her personal time and obsession with work, success, and wealth. At one point she came across a homeless man and she was bothered by his presence; she remembers thinking to herself I dont even like who this person is anymore. Since Marcario was so caught up in the workplace and on making money she began losing herself. Greed can take over a person’s emotions and make them lose ethics. Rather than continuing to make great profit, Marcario decided to step down from the company and she put herself first. However, some employees get caught up in the money-making business and become so corrupt so that they end up in jail. In regard to the question, the difference between an ethical versus nonethical person is determined by how they allow greed to take over their lives; some can recognize unethical behavior while others disregard it and fall into a lifestyle full of unfaithfulness and corruptness.
