Competencies for Professional Nursing Practice

Nursing students who focus on their routines would not be able to reason, plan, and take appropriate action effectively as they lack the ability to think critically. Having a routine allows nurses to do the same things every day and this prevents them from attempting challenging situations. It prevents them from preparing for any unexpected situations as they think that they will face similar situations every day. Therefore, nursing students may not be able to make a quick reasoning and judgement when unexpected situations occur. Nursing students who do not follow a routine are able to make an informed and outcome-focused decision when they face unexpected situations (Masters, 2018). Furthermore, they are mentally and intellectually prepared to handle any situation they may encounter. These students are able to identify some of the major issues and problems in patients and take the necessary action immediately. They make a clinical judgement that is characterized by intuition, logic, and creativity. For example, they are able to identify some of the unique health problems in patients, which are not easy to diagnose. They can apply logic and creativity in such problems to ensure that they provide solution (Masters, 2018).

In addition to that, nursing students who do not use routines are able to do constant reevaluating. They are able to evaluate the situation of the patient constantly to ensure that quality healthcare is provided. Nurses who have critical thinking skills and perform sound clinical judgement have a better performance in their tasks compared to those who follow routines. Besides, they can use the information presented to them to make informed decisions (Carson-Newman University Online, 2018). Primarily, these makes them better nurses as they can help patients with different kinds of problems. Additionally, critical thinking allows nurses to become productive throughout the day. Nursing is considered to be a demanding profession and it requires nurses to have more confident in both reasoning and knowledge. Today, nurses handle patients with complex health care needs and they are required to provide quality healthcare. Nurses’ routine can pose danger on the patients as it will limit their knowledge and experience. Nurses who use routine are not flexible and thus, they are not able to make adjustments according to the situations (Carson-Newman University Online, 2018). They do not accept diverse values and views from other professionals. They evaluate issues from only one angle and this prevents them from exploring ideas. Therefore, they make more errors when they do not consider an issue from different perspectives.

Clinical reasoning allows nurses to make observation regarding the status of the patient, understand the problem, and establish and implement the right interventions. It allows nurses to assess the outcomes, reflect and learn from the experience. This demonstrates that nurses should be able to do more than what is required in the routine. They should think “outside the box” to ensure that they obtain the best outcomes (McCartney, 2017). Experience allows nurses to depend on intuition when faced with a difficult or unexpected situation and act. Therefore, nursing students should not be fully committed to following routine as it does not give a room for reasoning and handling unexpected situation.
