Compose a 750-1000 word essay in response to one of three questions below. Each question requires you to watch and evaluate a different film. Your answer should include a clear thesis statement; at least three substantial points in support of your argument that make sustained use of key concepts learned in the course; and a conclusion. Be sure to follow your chosen question’s directions about referencing course readings and additional films.
This exam does not require you to consult or reference any secondary sources beyond those included in the syllabus. All work submitted for evaluation must be composed in formal, error-free, academic English, and formatted according to either MLA, APA or Chicago documentation and presentation standards.
QUESTION 1

You may address formal, thematic, technological, or industrial factors, or any combination thereof. Your answer must reference 1917, at least two additional course films, and Lev Manovichs essay What is Digital Cinema?

Film: Escape from LA (John Carpenter, 1996) (Links to an external site.)
Question: Is it fair to consider a films director to be its author, akin to a novelist or painter? Why or why not? Answer using filmmaker John Carpenter as a case study. Support your argument with reference to Escape from LA, at least two additional films from the course, and course readings by Ian Conrich and David Woods and by Ed Sikov.
