Go to the library nursing database CINAHL and search for a Concept Analysis article on a concept of interest and discuss the following:
I chose a concept analysis article about symptom burden in oncology patients. This is a topic of interest to me because I work in oncology, and I see patient every day with many side effects.
Briefly, describe the method of Concept Analysis used for this article (ex. Walker and Avant, Rodgers, Meleis, etc.)
In the article, Gapstur (2007) clearly states she used Rodgers evolutionary method of concept analysis. The purpose of Rodgers method of concept development is refine and clarify the concept, so it can be used in research and practice (McEwen & Wills, 2017). Although Rodgers identified steps in her process on concept analysis, the steps can be done concurrently or out of order, instead of waiting for each step to be done or completed before going to the next. Rodgers technique requires literature reviews from multidisciplinary areas to identify many aspects of the concept.
Discuss the authors aim and purpose for doing the concept analysis on this topic.
The purpose of this concept analysis is to analyze symptom burden as a concept. With the end result of implications for the need for more research of the concept to change the standard of care in patients with symptom burden on managing their symptoms.
Describe the defining attributes of the concept examined.
Five attributes were listed in the concept analysis. Dynamic attribute Identified severity and frequency of the symptoms depending on multiple factors. As diseases worsen so does the symptom burden. Multidimensional attributes identified prevalence and severity in multiple disease processes. Quantifiable attributes identified measurable data of the most prevalent symptom in cancer patients. It also identified number of symptoms per patient and the relationship of symptom burden to different characteristic of the patients. Physiologic attributes studied the way symptoms can cause a change in normal physical functioning of the body and measured emotional and physical distress. Subjective attributes measured prevalence of symptoms, distress and if there were changes to those measurements over time. This was measured using self-reporting data from the patients.
What are the benefits of completing a Concept Analysis for nursing theory development, research, and nursing practice? How can defining nursing concepts strengthen nursing as a profession?
Nurses care for patients based on evidence-based practices (EBP), which will ensure the standards of care are current and is best practice. To acquire a best practice, research needs to be done. For research to be done, there must first be a research problem or a question that needs to be answered by the research. Concept Analysis explores and defines a concept bringing clarity and understanding to the concept being explored (McEwen & Wills, 2017). Once the concept is defined and understood, research on this concept can begin. Therefore, concept analysis lays down the foundation to EBP.

In concept analysis of nursing activism by Florell (2020), the author explores the role of activism in contemporary nursing. The author uses the Walker & Avant (2019) analysis method. The method consisted of eight procedures: the identification of a theory, evaluating the purpose of an assessment, the identification of the primary significance of a theory, selecting attributes, and incorporating a model design (Kwak, 2018). Setting an alternative design and identifying the concept’s implications and empirical referents (Kwak, 2018). The author aims to define the meaning of nursing activism and explain its significance to the medical field (Florell, 2020). The author extrapolates the significance of nursing activism in resolving current professional challenges in the journal. In context, nursing activism is vital to improving health outcomes.
The concept supports the administration of compassionate care in healthcare systems. Second, the concept fosters advocacy for healthcare policies that promote optimal care outcomes through social and political activism (Ziehm et al., 2021). By definition, nursing activism refers to an urgent response to health-related inequities such as staff overcrowding, professional advancement, and inadequate health facilities (Disch & Kingston, 2021). Therefore, nursing activism impacts health outcomes by encouraging stakeholders to adopt rational all-inclusive policies that drive positive changes in healthcare. In clinical nursing, nurses who drive activism propose political policies on sensitive concerns such as integrating technologies in healthcare, scrutiny in patient privacy and increasing hospital resources (Jaurigue & Schmidt, 2022). The two key benefits of completing research on concept analysis are the researcher develops a comprehensive understanding of the concept and implements necessary changes to improve care outcomes (Jaurigue & Schmidt, 2022). For instance, an advanced nurse can evaluate and prescribe rational treatment interventions in clinical judgment. Concept analysis strengthens nursing by developing clinical research skills, planning, and strategic treatment frameworks (Disch & Kingston, 2021). Most significantly, the concepts advocate for inter-departmental staff collaboration and a human-centered treatment approach.
