Using the writing techniques discussed during both the summary writing and synthesizing sources lecture and corresponding reading in the supplemental writing texts, A Short Guide to College Writing (Barnet, Bellanca & Stubbs) – Chapter 7, pp 129-145. 

 

The assignment may not be less than 700 words nor exceed 1000 words. For this assignment, citations are required. Standard authority citations must be used (typically MLA, although any uniform recognized citation system is acceptable). 

 

The instructions for the synthesis assignment are simple. Using three sources (two supporting and one opposing), provide an overview of your proposed topic by integrating them using the synthesizing techniques discussed during the lecture and in the above-referenced material. 

 

Regarding the topic proposal component, the entire discussion should address the six questions listed in the Topic Proposal Outline. Note that the topic must relate to a topic contained in the course curriculum listed on the on the Course Outline & Syllabus. While I will not a select your topic for you (also part of the writing challenge), if you have any doubt whether your desired topic relates to the course curriculum, just ask. Your proposal must also be written in essay format, not simply “answering” the questions presented in the topic proposal outline. 

 

The objective is to integrate your three sources in such a way that links (not as in hyper) them to a current events and/or new issue that gives direction to the research for your term paper. Essentially, it is a “stepping stone” to the term paper. Extensive research beyond the three published sources is not necessary for the proposal but may and should constitute work for the term paper. Your opinion may be freely expressed but must be properly supported.
