For this final assignment, write 3.5-4.5 pages reflecting on your experience in this class, your evolution as a writer, where your strengths and weaknesses lie, and what you could do to keep improving.
Be sure to be as specific and concrete as possible. For example, don’t just say you want your writing to be more organized; describe what specifically is wrong with your organization and how you could improve it. Likewise, if you think your writing is often not as coherent as it could be, pick a paragraph to exemplify your point and show how it’s not coherent. Examples and specificity are your friends. This assignment will be very painful for you if you keep things vague and general.
The primary grading criteria will be the seriousness and specificity of self-reflection. Complacency will lose you points (everyone, even professional writers, have massive room for growth in multiple areas), as well vagueness. Conversely, if you walk your reader through a detailed example of a thoughtful edit (already completed or just hypothetical), showing what your writing was before, how you changed (or could change) it, and why, you will be rewarded with a high score. Pick edits that pushed your writing to a whole new level, not ones that just tweaked it a bit. Be ambitious and don’t hesitate to suggest edits that would require rewriting whole sections or even changing the focus of the paper entirely.
Edits are not the only thing you can talk about, but they are perhaps the easiest. I encourage you also to reflect in general on your life as a writer and how you can and will continue to grow in the future.
